J.P. Cullen & Sons, Inc., one of the oldest construction firms in the country, is now in its 120th year of business. The fourth generation of Cullens now lead the company, perpetuating the legacy of quality and pride that began with its founders here in Janesville, Wisconsin.
While many things have changed over the course of our 120 years of doing business, the most significant and shared values have not – including those values which foster individual development, family integrity, and a sense of community health and well-being. As community builders, we are acutely aware of the many communities we belong to, professionally and locally. We attempt to give to those organizations that contribute to the common good while having a dramatic impact on the individual and his/her family.
We continue to strive to provide the skilled project management and exceptional craftsmanship clients count on. We do not compromise on quality and we will not compromise on PRIDE – Personal Responsibility in Daily Excellence – for which J.P. Cullen & Sons, Inc. is known.
As part of the versatile renovation of the former Janesville High School, the Janesville Performing Arts Center is housed in what had been the school’s auditorium. The auditorium is surrounded by apartments, complete with chalkboards that have been converted from the original classrooms.
Aspects of the renovation include the replacement of the old wooden seats, an extension of the original stage, retiring of the existing balcony, and the addition of balcony side loges, aisle lighting, ADA accessible ramps, stairs and railings. The 640-seat theater is enhanced with a state-of-the-art audio system, upgraded house and theatrical lighting, and mechanical systems. The main entries to the theater have sound control vestibules to mitigate the sound transmission into the adjacent apartments. The renovation included plaster restoration to match the existing ornate plasterwork and decorative painting appropriate to the Arts and Crafts era. Enhancements to the rest of the facility include a new entrance marquee, a lobby with a grand staircase leading to the auditorium and the conversion of the music wing into a multipurpose room. Support spaces include a director’s office, box office, catering preparation area, dressing rooms, storage, and spacious restroom facilities.
